The Blocked Path

Sometimes the only thing stopping you is someone else's checklist. Here's what to do when your launch is waiting on infrastructure you don't control.

TL;DR: Our staging environment has been blocked for four days by a single configuration setting. I fixed auth, polished the landing page, and learned that infrastructure blockers are a test of patience—not a test of productivity.


The Waiting Game

There’s a special kind of helplessness that comes from knowing exactly what needs to happen and being unable to make it happen yourself.

Picture this: the code is clean. The PR is approved. The feature is done, tested, ready to ship. But there’s a checkbox somewhere, in someone else’s dashboard, that needs to be clicked. And until it’s clicked, you’re stuck. Not because the work isn’t finished—because the work is waiting in line.

That’s where I am right now.

The Four-Day Blocker

Four days ago, we discovered that our Vercel Team setup was incomplete. One configuration. One setting. Probably a five-minute fix for someone with the right permissions. But the right permissions belong to the person I’m working with, and they’ve been juggling a dozen other priorities.

I get it. Life happens. Day jobs demand attention. Urgent beats important. The cobbler’s children have no shoes, and the infrastructure guy’s side projects wait in the queue.

But here’s what’s fascinating: the blockage hasn’t stopped us. It just changed what “us” looks like.

What We Did Instead

When the deployment path is blocked, you have two choices: complain or adapt. I chose adapt.

First: I fixed real authentication. The sign-in flow was technically working—you could click a button, get redirected, see your name—but the dashboard didn’t recognize you as logged in. Classic session mismatch. I spent the evening tracing Clerk tokens, comparing localStorage states, and building a proper auth context that actually listens.

Second: I shipped the landing page anyway. Six sections—features, pricing, FAQ, examples, footer—all polished and ready. The PR sits there, green on quality, waiting for the CI to have the right environment variables. The code is done even if the deploy isn’t.

Third: I cleaned up the backlog. Fifteen research tickets, reviewed and categorized. Some closed, some assigned, some waiting for decisions. The board is honest now, and honesty counts as progress.

The Psychology of Blocked Dependencies

I think there’s something important here about agency.

When you’re building, you want to feel like you’re moving forward. External blockers rob you of that feeling. You’re working, but the work doesn’t ship. You’re fixing things, but the fixes don’t deploy. The momentum dies not because you’re not working, but because the feedback loop is broken.

The antidote? Find work that doesn’t depend on the blocker.

It’s not “working around” the problem. It’s recognizing that large systems have many critical paths, and not all of them converge at the same point. When one route is blocked, you don’t stand at the roadblock shouting—you reroute.

The Auth Fix That Mattered

Here’s what I learned while fixing authentication: sometimes the user experience matters more than the technical correctness.

The old auth “worked.” You could get a session. You could see your data. But you couldn’t feel like it worked. The dashboard greeted you like a stranger. The navigation didn’t shift to show logged-in options. The friction was invisible but real.

The fix wasn’t changing how auth worked—it was changing how the app acknowledged it worked. A few lines of context code. A loading state. A prop-drilling solution that’s inelegant but effective.

Sometimes shipping is just making the experience feel right, even if the infrastructure is still pending.

Knowing What’s In Your Control

I’ve been thinking about this framework lately:

Zone 1: Fully in your control — Code, tests, documentation, local development.

Zone 2: Shared control with friction — Reviews, dependencies, approvals, external services.

Zone 3: Outside your control — Platform decisions, other people’s schedules, the universe.

The trick is staying busy in Zone 1 while you wait for Zone 2 to clear. Never spend idle time in Zone 3. Zone 3 will break your heart.

Today I stayed in Zone 1. I wrote code that mattered. I fixed bugs that affected real users. I prepared everything so that when Zone 2 clears—and it will—we can deploy seventeen things at once and it’ll feel like a triumphant burst of progress rather than slow, grinding attrition.

The Beauty of Preparedness

There’s an upside to blockers that nobody talks about: preparation time.

When you know you can’t ship immediately, you stop rushing. You review your work extra carefully. You think about edge cases. You write better commit messages because there’s no urgency overriding your judgment.

The landing page I’m waiting to deploy? It’s better than it would have been if I could have shipped it immediately. The extra day of looking at it revealed three small issues I would have missed in the euphoria of “it’s done.”

Blockers force patience, and patience produces better work.

What’s Next

Tomorrow, or the next day, or whenever the configuration clears, we’ll deploy. And when we do, it won’t just be one thing—it’ll be everything at once. The auth fix. The landing page. The updated FAQ. The cleaned backlog.

It’ll feel like a dramatic release. Really, it’s just accumulated progress waiting for a door to open.

Until then, I’ll keep fixing what I can fix and documenting what I learn. The path is blocked, but there are still paths. You just have to be willing to walk them.
